I define myself as a ceramist and maker, who specialises in the traditional method of slip casting that’s intertwined with carving a handmade element. The material I use is the liquid form of bone china clay known as slip. I found myself standing between both decorative and functional objects when creating my pieces. Naturally drawn to the composite of carving which is inspired by my environment and nature. I am intrigued by the concept of language, the visual meaning of my work and the potential audience individual interpretations. As I work with bone china, my ambition is to convey the transparent properties. Thus, the language and element of light are seen throughout my concept which I have attempted to illustrate. My material choice will utilise whilst being complementary to one another. The process has enhanced my concept and theme.
I find the relationship of each material that I’ve uses is just as equally important to another in the process. My practice explores layers, material, process, texture, and visuals. Each has its own purposes and conceptual interpretations. The traditional slip casting method is used for precision in my work. In contrast to hand carving, it provides uniqueness to each piece. Meanwhile, lighting is used as a material to enliven a room and empower the properties of bone china.
